Questions to keep separate

Question or featureExplanationWhat it does not establish
Action 6 depth limitsDJI specifies 20 m without housing and 60 m with its official housing. [2]Applies to this model and stated configuration; do not infer other models’ limits or suitability for every environment. [3]
Housing preparationKeep seals clean and intact, dry the interior, follow the exact maker's pre-use check, and rinse and dry after use. [3]Preparation reduces avoidable problems but does not guarantee a leak-free dive.
Observation fitHabitat video emphasizes view, stability, battery, and controls; small-subject stills emphasize close focus, scale, and light. [1]An equipment checklist does not establish comparative camera performance or species-identification accuracy. [1]

Start with the observation

A camera choice begins with the evidence you want to record. A broad habitat video needs enough field of view to place an organism in its surroundings, stable footage, workable controls, and battery capacity for the planned dive. A tiny stationary organism photograph instead depends on close-focus performance, usable scale, and light that reaches the subject. These are different tasks; a high resolution number alone does not settle either one. NOAA’s underwater photography guidance recommends becoming proficient at diving before adding camera operation, since framing and settings compete with attention to the dive itself. [1]

Consider a clearly hypothetical comparison. For a habitat video at 5 m, make a checklist for field of view, stabilization, battery duration, and whether housing controls are usable with gloves. For a still image of a small organism, check the closest focus, how you can include scale, and the lighting setup. A land-based handling trial can reveal awkward controls, but it cannot establish underwater image quality or species-identification accuracy. [1]

Treat depth ratings as boundaries

DJI specifies the Osmo Action 6 for use to 20 m without its housing and 60 m with its official housing. The manufacturer recommends housing for prolonged underwater shooting or high-impact water, and says the battery and USB covers must be shut and the lens cover tightened. Those figures describe this model and configuration; depth limits differ among Action models, so another model’s rating cannot be transferred to it. [2]

A rating is not a general promise for every liquid, impact, or duration. DJI excludes hot springs, extreme underwater environments, and corrosive or unknown liquids from its usage guidance. Its housing instructions call for clean, intact seals, a dry interior before closing, secured covers and catches, a pre-use check, and rinsing and drying after use. Follow the exact model's prescribed test and conditions; preparation does not guarantee against leaks. [2] [3]

Make light and water part of the specification

Underwater color and visibility depend on the light available and the water between lens and subject, as well as camera specifications. NOAA’s guidance discusses color and light losses underwater and high frame rates for video. A camera that records a detailed file cannot recover information that was obscured by poor visibility or insufficient light. [1]

For observation, define the conditions as well as the subject: still image or video, expected distance, ambient light, and whether supplemental lighting is feasible. A frame may document shape or behavior while still lacking the color or detail needed to distinguish similar organisms. Resolution and housing depth alone cannot establish identification accuracy. [1]

Use a requirements check, not a winner list

Compare candidates against the actual dive plan: required depth and duration, housing controls, close-focus needs, stabilization, battery, and lighting. Verify the exact model’s instructions and test the handling sequence on land. This is a requirements comparison, not a hands-on ranking: the available specifications and guidance provide no reliability testing, price comparison, or direct image-quality evaluation. [2] [3]
