Organism guides connect the shapes of marine animals to the ways they move, feed and reproduce. Research notes explain specific discoveries and the tools used to make them. The field library offers practical reading on observations, photography and coastal ecology.
We distinguish photographs from illustrations, name the sources behind scientific claims, and explain where an observation stops short of a conclusion. Our reference shelf includes NOAA, the Smithsonian, MBARI and the World Register of Marine Species.
The history of this domain
Coldwater.science previously hosted marine biologist and underwater photographer Alexander Semenov’s portfolio, with galleries organized by organism groups and material about ocean exploration. Contemporary coverage in PetaPixel and Tools & Toys documents that earlier site.
This is a new, independently operated publication. It is not Semenov’s portfolio, and has no affiliation with him or the Aquatilis project. Historical addresses now contain new educational material; the original photographs, articles and personal biography have not been reproduced.
Images and accuracy
The homepage photograph is credited to NOAA Ocean Exploration. Our organism plates and research diagrams are new explanatory illustrations. They simplify anatomy and are not identification keys. View sources and image credits or suggest a correction.
